Wrestlers compete at MSOE Invite and Koch Open

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team competed in two separate tournaments on Saturday, with Blugolds wrestling at both the Jim Koch Open and the MSOE Invitational.

Robert Moesenthin (Fr. – Woodbury, MN) led UW-Eau Claire at the Jim Koch Open with a sixth place finish at 141 pounds. The newcomer won by fall in his first match of the day (2:43) but fell in his second bout to fall into the consolation bracket. Moesenthin would tally two more wins, one by major decision (17-4) and the other by pin (2:00) but would be defeated in the consolation semifinal. In the fifth place match, he would lose by tech fall.

Several Blugolds earned spots on the podium at the MSOE Invitational, led by James Huntley's (Jr. – Woodbury, MN/Stillwater) first place finish at 197. The junior went a perfect 4-0 on the day, starting off with a major decision (14-4) followed by a 9-6 decision. Huntley advanced to the championship match after an injury default in the semifinal before defeating Central's Gavin Babcock with a 5-0 decision to claim first place.

Also at 197, Mason Hawkins (Jr. – Farmington, MN) recorded a fifth place finish. In the first round, Hawkins won by fall (6:46) and won by sudden victory in the quarterfinal.  In the semifinal, Hawkins fell by major decision but he would bounce back with a 9-5 decision in the consolation semifinal. In the fifth place match, he took the win by medical forfeit.

Evan Lawrence (Jr. – Hugo, MN/Mahtomedi) took second place at 174 with a 3-1 record on the day. Lawrence tallied three pins in his first three bouts to set up a championship match against Chicago's Kyle Peisker, where he came up just short, losing by a 4-3 decision.

Tyler Demo (So. – Loves Park, IL/Belvidere North) was third at 141. Demo tallied a quick pin in the quarterfinal (0:44) but fell in the semifinal by a 7-5 decision. In the consolation semifinal, Demo tallied a 12-2 major decision and would claim third place after defeating Eli Mondrella of UW-Oshkosh by tech fall (18-2).

Also taking third place was Adam Rients (So. – Waterville, MN) at 157 pounds. Rients had a pin (2:06) in the first round but fell in the quarterfinal. Rients won in a tie breaker in the consolation second round (TB-1 3-2) and in the third won with a 9-4 decision. He would go on to record two more wins by decision to take third.

Jack Marley (So. – Trempealeau/GET) was fourth at 125. Marley fell in the first round but would advance to the third place match after two medical forfeits and a tech fall win over Justin Hames of Elmhurst. In the third place bout, Marley fell by a narrow 3-2 decision.

At 165, Chase Schmidt (Jr. – Rice Lake) recorded a fifth place finish for the Blugolds. After losing in the first round, Schmidt tallied a pin in his next bout (1:14) and won by tech fall (18-0) in the third match of the day. He added another pin (3:41) in the third consolation round but fell in the consolation semifinal by major decision. In the fifth place match, Schmidt won by injury default.

Also taking fifth place was Tyler Vanderlois (Fr. – Combined Locks/Kaukauna) at 141. He won by tech fall (18-2) in the first round and fell in the quarterfinal to move into the consolation bracket. Vanderlois won by fall (3:20) and by decision (8-1) before falling in the consolation semifinal. In the fifth place matchup, he recorded a quick pin (0:24) over Elmhurst's Joe Rongaus.

The Blugolds will be back at home on Friday, Dec. 13 when they host UW-Stevens Point. Action will begin at 7 p.m. at the McPhee Center.
