Blugold Gymnasts earn Academic All-American Honors

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (Blugolds.com) – The Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) announced the 2019-20 Team GPA Rankings and Academic All-American list on Tuesday.

The Blugolds recorded a team cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.39 and had 11 athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans for earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Those gymnasts named to the Academic All-American list were Ashley Benes (Fr. – Allen Park, MI), Bailey Davidson (So. – Eagan, MN/Eastview), Jada DeBoer (Jr. – Puyallup, WA), Katie Fahrenkamp (Fr. – Waconia, MN), Megan Fayler (Sr. – Afton, MN/Stillwater), Andrea Gessner (Jr. – Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial), Erin Hillegonds (Jr. – Washington, IL), Annabelle Howat (Fr. – Aurora, IL/Oswego East), Danielle Malecha (So. – Inver Grove Heights, MN/Rosemount), Molly Rajala (Fr. – Grand Rapids, MN), and Tayla Thome (So. – Medina, OH/Buckeye).

Overall, there were 53 teams with a team GPA of 3.5 or more on a 4.0 scale, an increase from 31 teams last year. A record number of student-athletes, 193 (14.23%) recorded a 4.0 GPA, which is an increase from 8.91% from 2019. Eight schools had a team GPA greater than 3.8 and 18 over 3.7. All of these numbers are up from last year, which could be related to classes going online starting in March.

The WCGA is the advocate for women's collegiate gymnastics.
