Softball Splits with St. Thomas on Opening Day

ROSEMOUNT, Minn. (Blugolds.com) - Opening the 2011 season, the UW-Eau Claire softball team split a doubleheader with the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at the Irish Sports Dome tonight.

In the early game, the Blugolds fell 2-0. But they followed with a win in the second game, defeating the Tommies 12-8.

In the second game, Emily Muller (Jr.-Lancaster, Wis.) hit a three-run homer in the first inning to drive in Aleisha Harper (Jr.-Mondovi, Wis./Eau Claire North) and Jenny Hess (So.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln).

While St. Thomas closed the gap in the second inning by scoring two runs, the Blugolds answered in the bottom of the inning with seven runs. Eau Claire held a 10-2 lead after the second inning.

The Blugolds went on to score two more runs to hang on to the win as St. Thomas scored six more.

Sunday the Blugolds will play another doubleheader as they face Buena Vista University (Iowa) at the Irish Sports Dome. Game one will get underway at 11 a.m.
