Softball Ends NCAA Tournament Run at Home

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire softball team ended its season with a 4-1 loss to UW-River Falls in an NCAA Division III Regional contest at Gelein Field today.

Eau Claire, which is hosting the eight-team Eau Claire Regional this weekend, finishes the season with a 29-16 mark. The 29 wins are the most the Blugolds have achieved since the 2008 season when they won the national title. River Falls improves to 27-14 on the season and moves on to face UW-La Crosse Saturday at 11 a.m. at Gelein Field in an elimination game.

The Blugolds had a tough time on offense as they finished with only three hits. Two of the three hits came in the bottom of the second inning when Eau Claire scored one run to tie the game at 1-1.

With two runners on base, Jenny Hess (So.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) laid down a bunt and Emily Muller (Jr.-Lancaster, Wis.) beat the throw home to score the Blugolds' lone run. But River Falls' Rose Tusa struck out the next two batters to leave two Blugolds stranded on base.

With the game tied at 1-1, River Falls added two runs in the top of the fourth and one more in the top of the fifth. The Falcons recorded 12 hits, with Ashley Goettl leading the team with three. Goettl and Alyssa Black also led the Falcons with two runs each.

Emily Haluska (So.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) had two of the Blugolds' three hits while Muller had the other.

In the circle, Rose Tusa picked up the win to improve to 20-7 while Emma Wishau (Fr.-Waterford, Wis./Union) was given the loss to drop to 8-7. Wishau recorded two strikeouts while allowing six hits and two runs. Ashley Meinen (Jr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) and Emily Ruegemer (Fr.-St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) also saw time in the circle.

Seniors Sara Baumgartner (Arcadia, Wis.) and Kaity Acker (Cross Plains, Wis./Middleton) ended their careers as Blugolds.
