Men's Tennis Splits In Iowa

Mount Vernon, IA (Blugolds.com)- The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire men's tennis team fell 7-2 to No. 12 ranked Grinnell College on Friday, and bounced back to defeat Cornell (IA) 8-1 on Saturday.

In the Blugolds 7-2 loss to Grinnell (IA) on Friday night, Matt Christensen (Rochester, Minn. /Century) and  Grant Mauthe (Neenah, Wis.) earned the only points for Eau Claire. Christensen defeated Lane (GCM) 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 at number two singles, while Mauthe earned a 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 victory over Stickels (GCM) at number three singles.

On Saturday the Blugolds bounced back to earn a dominating win over Cornell College. Eau Claire was dominate from the start winning all three doubles matches. Zach Janssen (Green Bay, Wis./ Notre Dame) paired with Christensen at number one doubles, the duo winning 8-7. Mauthe and  Adam Burk (Forest Lake, Minn/ Totino Grace) were victorious at number two doubles, defeating Tom Greene/Drew Arnold (CCM) 8-0.  Evan Fridinger (Woodbury, Minn.) and Matt Gilbert (Minneapolis, Minn. / Washburn) paired up and finished the doubles sweep with a 8-5 victory. In singles action the Blugolds' continued their dominance winning five of six singles matches. Christensen earned a three set win at number two doubles, while Mauthe made quick work of Greene (CCM) at the number three spot. Burk won in straight sets at the four spot, while Fridinger took down Adamou (CCM) 6-2, 6-1 at the five slot. Gilbert finished the match with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at the number six slot.
