Women’s Hockey Stopped by Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team allowed two first period goals and could not recover as the Blugolds lost to ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point 4-1 here today at K.B. Willet Arena.

The Blugolds fall to 5-16-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the WIAC while the Pointers improve to 13-6-2 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play.

The Pointers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead scoring goals at 4:57 and 13:47 of the first period.  The second goal came off a Stevens Point power play.  Both teams fired seven shots on goal in the first period.

Eau Claire outshot Stevens Point 10-9 in the second period but was unable to score a goal.  The Pointers extended their lead to 3-0 scoring the lone goal of the period at 10:17.

The lead would grow to 4-0 on a Pointer goal at 1:11 of the third period.  Claudia Gagnon (So.-Duluth, MN/East) to the Blugolds on the board scoring her fourth goal of the year unassisted at 7:20.

Paige Dale (So.-Andover, MN), Sam Knutson (Sr.-North St. Paul, MN) and Jennifer Thomsen (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN) each fired four shots on goal for the Blugolds.

Goalie Kim Van Brunt (Jr.-Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) saved 20 shots playing all 60 minutes between the pipes.

Eau Claire outshot Stevens Point 30-24.  The Pointers went one-for-two on power play opportunities while the Blugolds were 0-for-3.  Few penalties were called as the Blugolds received four penalty minutes on two minor infractions while the Pointers were whistled for three infractions totaling six penalty minutes.

The Blugolds will host the Pointers next Friday, February 6 at Hobbs Ice Center in the final regular season meeting between both schools.  Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
