RIVER FALLS, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team allowed three goals in both the first and second periods falling to 6th-ranked UW-River Falls 6-1 here tonight in a WIAC Women's Ice Hockey Tournament Semifinal at Hunt Arena.
The Blugolds fall to 5-20-1 overall while the Falcons improve to 22-3-1.
The Falcons scored the first goal of the game 38 seconds after the opening face-off then added goals at 8:37 and 18:48 taking a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second period looked much like the first for Eau Claire as River Falls scored goals at 1:35, 3:20 and 19:07 extending their lead to 6-0 entering the second intermission.
The Blugolds continued to battle and got their first goal at 11:28 of the third period when Jennifer Thomsen (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN) scored a power play goal assisted by Sydney Schneider (Fr.-Chippewa Falls, WI/Chi-Hi) and Jaedyn Walz (Fr.-Woodbury, MN/East Ridge).
Goalie Paige Turner (Jr.-Iron River, WI/Duluth East) stopped 29 shots on goal playing all 60 minutes for the Blugolds. Katie Burkey (So.-Ramsey, MN/Anoka) took a team-high seven shots for Eau Claire.
Eau Claire was outshot by River Falls 35-12. The Blugolds received six penalty minutes on three minor infractions while the Falcons served 16 penalty minutes whistled for eight infractions. Eau Claire when one-for-seven on its power play opportunities while the Falcons scored on goal out of three power play chances.
The Blugolds return to Hunt Arena needing a win and a mini-game victory to extend its season. Face-off is set for 2:05 p.m.
