Women’s Hockey Falls Short Against Ninth-Ranked Yellowjackets

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team lost a hard-fought game to ninth-ranked UW-Superior 4-2 here today at Hobbs Ice Center.

The Blugolds fall to 0-6-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the WIAC while the Yellowjackets improve to 6-1-0 and 2-0-0 in conference play.

Trailing 2-0 Sam Knutson (Sr.-North St. Paul, MN) scored her first goal of the season at 10:41 of the second period off a power play assisted by Ashley Baugher (Jr.-Crystal Lake, IL/Central) and Amanda Kane (Sr.-Maplewood, MN/North St. Paul) cutting the Yellowjacket lead to 2-1. 

Superior added two quick goals at 11:05 and 12:31 of the second period pushing their lead to 4-1.  Claudia Gagnon (So.-Duluth, MN/East) answered the run with her second goal of the season assisted again by Kane to climb back within two goals at 4-2.

Neither team was able to score in a penalty-filled third period that saw both teams whistled for four penalties.  Eau Claire pulled goalie Paige Turner (Jr.-Iron River, WI/Duluth East) with 1:39 remaining but was unable to score with an extra goal scorer.

Turner saved 23 Yellowjacket shots for the game.  Turner's season record now stands at 0-4-0.

The Blugolds continue conference play next Friday, November 21 when they travel to UW-River Falls.  The Falcons are currently ranked fifth in the latest USCHO.com NCAA Division III National Poll.  Face-off is set for 2:05 p.m.
