Women’s Hockey Falls in Season Opener at Bethel

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team opened the 2014-15 season with a 5-0 setback to Bethel University here tonight at the National Sports Center.

It was the first game of the season for both teams.  Bethel received votes in the Preseason USCHO.com NCAA Division III Top 10 poll.

The Royals scored two goals in each of the first two periods to take a 4-0 lead.  The Blugold offense was unable to find a rhythm as they were outshot 35-11.  The Eau Claire penalty kill unit played well as Bethel was unable to score on six power play opportunities.

Forward Sam Knutson (Sr.-North St. Paul, MN) led the Blugolds taking three shots followed by defenseman Amanda Kane (Sr.-Maplewood, MN/North St. Paul) with two. 

Goalie Paige Turner (Jr.-Iron River, WI/Duluth East) saved 24 shots over the first two periods.  Goalie Kim Van Brunt (Jr.-Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) saved six shots in the final period. 

Tomorrow the Blugolds return home where they will face Bethel at Hobbs Ice Center.  Face-off is set for 7 p.m.
