Women's Tennis Beats WIAC Opponent 8-1

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team defeated Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opponent UW-Stevens Point 8-1 at the Ade Olson Courts today.

The Blugolds swept doubles play and fell in only the No. 6 singles match to improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in WIAC play.

Gretchen Bachmeier (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) gave up just three games, winning 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles spot.

Both Taylor Heltne (So.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Katie Gillman (Fr.-Red Wing, Minn.) lost only four games each on their way to winning singles matches. Heltne won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 while Gillman won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3.

Megan Born (Jr.-Antigo, Wis.) and Emily Hiebl (Jr.-Wausau, Wis./East) played closely contested battles but both found their way to wins, taking the No. 1 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Born won 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 while Hiebl won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

On the doubles side, Heltne and Gillman had an impressive 8-0 win at No. 2 while Born and Hiebl picked up an 8-4 win in the No. 1 spot. At No. 3, Bachmeier and Mary Frassetto (Fr.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) won 8-6.

The Blugolds will be back at home next Friday for another WIAC matchup as they face UW-Oshkosh at 3:30 p.m.
