Women's Tennis Splits Two Home Contests

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team split wins at the McPhee Physical Education Center today.

The Blugolds opened the day with a tough 9-0 loss to Luther College (Iowa) but finished the day with a 7-2 victory over the College of St. Benedict (Minn.).

Against the St. Benedict Blazers, the Blugolds dropped just the No. 5 singles match. Emily Hiebl (Jr.-Wausau, Wis./East) and Katie Gillman (Fr.-Red Wing, Minn.) both played close singles matches but came out on top.

Megan Born (Jr.-Antigo, Wis.) picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles and Taylor Heltne (So.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the No. 2 spot. Gretchen Bachmeier (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) was the other winner for the Blugolds, coming up with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4.

In doubles play, Born and Hiebl won at No. 1 while Gillman and Heltne won 8-2 in the No. 2 spot. The No. 3 doubles match was closely contested the Blugolds ended up falling 9-7.

The Blugolds will next face Stout on Sept. 16 in Menomonie. Action will get underway at 3:30 p.m.
