MOORHEAD, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey traveled Thanksgiving weekend to face non-conference opponent Concordia-Moorhead on Friday and came home with a 3-1 win at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Starting the first period both teams would fight for control over the game. The Blugolds would have a goal waved off with 7 minutes to go in the first and being evenly matched up with Moorhead in goals as well as shots, the first period remained scoreless.
The Blugolds would have a slow start in the second beginning with the Cobber's scoring just under halfway through the period. But just three minutes after the Concordia goal, Eau Claire's Abby Roeser (Jr. - Cottage Grove, MN/East Ridge) would score to tie it up at one with assists from Ellie Burris (So- Mound Westonka, MN/Mound Westonka) and Courtney Wittig (Sr. - Green Bay, WI/ Bay Port). The Blugolds would strike again with a shot from the point from Ella Ierino (Fr. - Duluth, MN) scoring her first collegiate goal. Within a span of a minute, Eau Claire went from being down 1 to 0 to leading Moorhead 2 to 1 to end the second period.
In the third the Blugolds would go in and out of the box, but they would find the back of the net after a controversial goal. Kelly Knetter (Sr. - Wausau, WI/ West) would claim the odd goal to seal the 3-1 win. Erin Connolly (Jr- Mequon, WI/ Homestead) would save 22 out of the 23 shots she faced in her fourth win of the season.
The Blugolds (5-2-1) take a well-deserved break before retuning back to Hobbs Ice Arena to host a double header against the St. Norbert Green Knights on Friday, December 7th and Saturday, December 8th both 2 p.m. Continue to follow the Blugolds on Blugold Game Day or on the 'UWEC Blugolds' app.
