EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team hosted UW-Superior Yellowjackets on Saturday. The Blugolds would have their second overtime game in a row and come out with a 5 to 4 win at Hobbs Ice Arena.
UW-Eau Claire would keep the game at 0-0 in the first period. Staying clean and staying out of the box, the Blugolds would out-shoot the Yellowjackets 11 to 8.
The Blugolds exploded for three goals in the second period, led by Courtney Wittig (Sr. – Green Bay, WI/Bay Port). The senior scored the first goal at 1:52 and a second at 3:03. With the Blugolds continuing to dominate in shots, the Blugolds would put another goal in at 6:25 by Erin Goodell (Sr - Maplewood, MN/Woodbury) with an assist from Addie Young (Fr. - Superior, WI/Superior).
Eau Claire would begin to go in and out of the box and with that the Yellowjackets came back with a goal halfway through the period. Ending the second period the Blugolds continue to out-shoot the Yellowjackets 32 to 11.
Starting an exciting third period, the Yellowjackets would strike first to bring the score to 3-2. Both teams would fight back and forth and up and down the ice, but the Superior would find the back of the net and tie up the game with 8 minutes to go in the third. The Blugolds would comeback with a strong shot from the top of the circle and bounce in the front of the net and Abby Roeser (Jr. - Cottage Grove, MN/East Ridge) would find the back of the net at 12:16 in the third.
The Yellowjackets would tie the game up, 4-4, with a minute to go in the third to force overtime. It didn't take long though for Emily Bauer (Jr. - Wausau, WI/East) to come out with a one-time snipe to get the overtime win. Blugolds would out-shoot the Yellowjackets 44 t 19.
