Three Blugolds Named WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Earning recognition this week were men's diver Nick Badilla (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./North), women's swimmer Nicole Dorvinen (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) and men's swimmer Jake McDade (Fr.-Monona, Wis./Monona Grove).

Badilla had a solid day in a dual meet against UW-Whitewater on Jan. 28. He won both the one and three-meter dives, finishing the three-meter with a score of 304.65, while winning the one-meter dive with a mark of 286.95.

Dorvinen helped the Blugolds to a 147-96 victory over UW-Whitewater on Jan. 28, by winning two events with pool-record times. She placed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a pool-record time of 10:33.69, almost 40 seconds ahead of the rest of the field and more than 10 seconds faster than the previous school record. Dorvinen also won the 500-yard freestyle with a pool-record time of 5:10.34. The previous pool record in the 500-yard event was 5:11.28, set by Laura Ladwig in 1982. The previous pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle was 10:43.98, set by Laura Ladwig in 1981.

McDade won two events in a dual meet against UW-Whitewater on Jan. 28. After more than 10 minutes swimming in the 1,000-yard freestyle, McDade grabbed a narrow victory with a time of 10:03.07, while the second-place finisher from UW-Whitewater finished with a mark of 10:03.80. McDade also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.18.
