Blugold Soccer Falls 1-0 to Ranked Calvin College

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire soccer team was handed its first defeat of the season after losing 1-0 to 15th-ranked Calvin College (Mich.) Saturday in St. Louis, Mo.

The first period closed scoreless, but it was Calvin College that struck first in the final period. At the 76:56 minute mark, the Knights' Francesca Smith flicked the ball into the Blugold net for the 1-0 lead. Eau Claire managed just one more shot during the game when Emily Turi (Fr.-North St. Paul, Minn.) took one just two minutes later, but it was ultimately saved by the Knight goalie.

During the 90 minute play, the Knights outshot the Blugolds 13-7. Though Eau Claire took more shots in the first, the second period shots were especially one-sided, with Eau Claire managing only three shots to Calvin College's 11.

Joan Mattheisen (Fr.-St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) served as Blugold goalie for the entire game and made five saves. The Knights recorded four saves for the day. The loss drops the Blugolds to 1-1 on the year.

Eau Claire will remain in St. Louis to play a match against 2nd-ranked Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
