Soccer Gives up Early Goal in 1-0 Loss to Knights

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire soccer team gave up an early goal and couldn't recover, falling 1-0 to Wartburg College (Iowa) at the Bollinger Fields today.

Just 2 minutes and 48 seconds into the game, Wartburg (12-4-1) scored and never looked back. Chelsea Frye scored after Blugold goalie Amanda Hakala (So.-Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) saved a shot from Anna Aquino.

The teams played nearly even the rest of the way with the Blugolds finishing with 12 shots to Wartburg's nine.

Hakala recorded four saves on the day while Wartburg goalie Monica Noti stopped five shots.

The Blugolds (11-6-1) fall to 0-3 all-time against the Knights. Last season Eau Claire also fell 1-0 in Waverly, Iowa but the game was decided in double overtime. Eau Claire also lost 2-1 against Wartburg in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

This was the fifth time this season the Blugolds were unable to record a goal and all five resulted in losses.

The Blugolds' schedule won't get any easier as they face conference-leader UW-Stevens Point Saturday in the final game of the regular season. Stevens Point is unbeaten in WIAC play this year and has already captured a share of the conference title. Action at the Bollinger Fields will get underway at 1 p.m.
