Two Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - UW-Eau Claire women's golfer Sara Mattes (Jr.-La Crosse, Wis./Central) and UW-Eau Claire soccer defender Michelle Shannon (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) have earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athlete of the Week honors, Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Mattes led the Blugolds to a second-place finish at the prestigious O'Brien National Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., where 10 of the top 13 teams in NCAA Division III competed.  She had 75 strokes on day one to put her in second place and totaled 83 on the second day to give her 158 for the tournament, tying for eighth place overall.

Shannon was a key component of the Blugolds' defense that registered back-to-back wins during the week.  UW-Eau Claire shutout UW-Oshkosh 1-0 to open WIAC play on Sept. 18, and recorded a 4-1 win over the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) on Sept. 19.  The Blugolds' stingy defense was primarily due to Shannon helping hold the leading scorers from both opponents from registering any shots. The Blugolds finished outshooting UW-Oshkosh 18-5 and St. Benedict 19-7.
