Scherling Nets Game Winner In Overtime

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team completed their weekend series against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. Sami Scherling (Sr. - Rogers, Minn.) was the evening hero, scoring in overtime to lift the Blugolds over the Pointers, 2-1.

The Blugolds kept the momentum from the 4-1 win over UWSP a day prior as Sadie Long (So. - Farmington, Minn.) scored her seventh goal of the year in the first three minutes of the contest. Eden Gruber (Jr. - Wausau, Wis./West) received the long assist on Long's goal to give Eau Claire a 1-0.

The opening goal last well into the second period as UWEC kept the offensive pressure high by outshooting UWSP 21-10 in the first two periods. The Pointers found their tying goal at 12:08 of the second period. Both squads found their chances in the final 28 minutes of regulation, but neither goaltender let their guard down as the teams went to overtime.

As the teams skated 3-on-3 during the extra frame, Sami Scherling found the game winner in the final minute. Scherling slammed home a rebound past the UWSP netminder to net her sixth goal of the season. Sophie Rausch (Sr. - Fergus Falls, Minn.) received the lone assist with the initial shot on the game winning goal.

Stephanie Martin (Sr. – Yorktown, Va./Tabb) stopped 11 of the 12 shots she faced in her 16th win of the year. Martin's record improves to 16-2-1 on the season.

The Blugolds (17-3-1, WIAC 8-1) will take a short break before they hit the ice on Wednesday, February 8th. UWEC will face off with St. Scholastica at Hobbs Ice Arena at 7PM.
