Women's Tennis Competes at ITA Regional/Gustavus Fall Invite

ST. PETER, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team competed over the past three days at the 2013 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships and the Gustavus Adolphus College Fall Invite.

The doubles pair of Katie Gillman (Sr.-Red Wing, Minn.) and Maddie Johnson (Jr.-Lakeville, Minn./South) led the team as they won the consolation title at the Midwest Regional Championships. After falling in their opening match, they won five straight matches to capture the title. The duo is now 8-3 on the season.

The Blugolds also had two runner-up singles finishes at the Gustavus Fall Invite.

In the No. 2 draw, Colleen McCullough (So.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) won three straight matches to get to the championship. In the championship match, she won the first set 6-3 but fell 6-4 and 10-6 in the super tiebreaker to take second place. On her way to the championship match, she lost just six games total. McCullough is now 6-3 on the season.

In the No. 4 draw, Amy Orthaus (Fr.-Lake City, Minn./Lincoln) also finished as a runner-up. After winning the first two matches by losing just six games total, she played a close semifinals match (6-4, 0-6, 10-7) but was able to come away with the win and a chance to play for the title. But in the championship match she fell 6-4, 6-0 to finish in second place.

The Blugolds will be off next weekend but will get back to conference play in two weeks when they travel to UW-Stevens Point on Friday (Oct. 4) and to UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Oct. 5).
