EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team was back at Simpson Field for the start of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play as they hosted UW-Oshkosh. An early goal by Megan Hansen (Jr. - Andover, MN/Anoka) was not enough as the Blugolds fell to the Titans, 1-2.
With WIAC competition beginning on Saturday, the Blugolds looked to bounce back after a tough weekday loss against Luther College on Wednesday.
The offensive strategy came out fast and in full force for UWEC to gain the game's first lead.
In the 26th minute of the first half, Megan Hansen received a forward pass from Lola Ruff (So. - St. Louis Park, MN) to push Eau Claire in attacking territory. After a set of moves around the central defender, Hansen rifled a shot to the far side and past the Oshkosh goalkeeper for the 1-0. The opening goal would be Hansen's fourth goal of the year. Ruff earned solo assist on the goal.
After their continued pressure through the first half, the 1-0 lead would remain all the way to halftime. The momentum shifted in the opposition's favor in the second frame though.
Piper Green (UWO) leveled the score at 1-1 just ten-minutes into the second half. About twenty minutes later, Mallory Knight (UWO) slotted home the game winning goal serving UWEC their first conference loss of the year.
Anna Sveiven (Sr. - Blaine, MN/Centennial) stopped six of the eight shots she faced and is now 1-3-1 on the season.
The Blugolds will head back on the road next week, Wednesday, October 6th when they take on Macalester College. Kickoff from Macalester Stadium in St. Paul, MN is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
