ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire women's soccer team hosted the St. Benedict Bennies for their fifth match of the season Saturday. After no score by either team in the first half, the Blugolds found their stride in the second and put away two goals to win 2-0.
The Blugolds started off the game well. They controlled possession right from the first whistle and put together many good passing series. The Blugolds were patient with their offensive efforts but ran into a bit of difficulty in the attacking third of the field, and the game went to halftime with no score by either team.
The Blugolds made some halftime adjustments and started off the second on the attack. In the 53rd minute, a Blugold corner resulted in the ball bouncing around in front of the Bennies goal before Emma Stange (Sr. – Andover, MN) knocked it to the back of the net to put them up by one.
Just six minutes later in the 59th, the Blugolds put together a quick offensive attack and Hannah Schaetzel (Sr. – Germantown, WI) broke through the Bennie back line and let a shot fly to the right of the keeper and into the net with an assist from Kristen Guyon (So. – Lake Geneva, WI), increasing their lead to two.
The Blugold defensive line stood tall, only allowing three shots, and Anna Sveiven (Sr. – Blaine, MN) and Kennedy Boll (Fr. – Franklin, WI) combined for a clean sheet in goal.
Blugold women's soccer will be at home again Wednesday night hosting Wartburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
