Cross Country Preview: Men Runners Look to Repeat Historic Season

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Following last year's historic National Championship season, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's cross country team is poised for another run into the national spotlight.

Although the men's team lost front runners Josh Thorson, Ryan Mugan, and Christian Leitner, Coach Dan Schwamberger, entering his 10th season as head coach, is confident about the season's possibilities.

"It's obviously a challenge, but they kind of paved the way and showed the guys what's possible," Schwamberger said. "It's not like the cupboards are bare."

Captain Matt Cooper (Sr.-Ashwaubenon, WI) is equally confident about the team's potential.

"Losing those guys is a huge loss, but I think this team is just as deep as it's ever been," the "Super Senior" said. "I see no reason why we can't be a trophy team."

Including Cooper, the Blugolds return two other runners from last year's team. Fellow Captain Nick Petersson (Sr.-Brookfield, WI/Central) and two-time cross country All-American Darin Lau (Jr.-Eau Claire, WI/Immanuel Lutheran) bring plenty of big race experience.

"Knowing what the pressure is like at Nationals and Regionals definitely helps heading into a new season," said Petersson. "It builds confidence. Being able to look back at the last couple of seasons reinforces the fact that we're able to perform when we need to."

Ryan Graham (Sr.-Maple Grove, MN), another team captain, also has a lot to offer in experience this fall.

"We have two leaders [Cooper and Petersson] that've been here for five years, and we have a solid group of underclassmen," the track All-American said. "We have a lot of veterans that are ready to make the leap to the national stage."

Above all, returning to the team is the same attitude towards racing and training that keeps the Blugold runners competitive and positive.

"I think the biggest thing is just focusing on the things that are within our control," said Schwamberger.

The men begin the season ranked fourth in NCAA Division III and will open at the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday, September 17 in Northfield, Minnesota.
