Three Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball middle hitter Madelyn Pashibin (Minneapolis, Minn./ Southwest), men's cross country runner Darin Lau (Eau Claire, Wis./ Immanuel) , and women's tennis player Sarah Henderson (Prior Lake, Minn.) have each been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Pashibin was named to the Nike/Eastbay Blugold All-Tournament Team after helping the Blugolds win all three of their games. The sophomore racked up 30 kills, averaged 2.73 kills per set and had a hitting percentage of .481. Pashibin had eight kills, zero errors, and hit .727 in a convincing 3-0 win over Bethel University (Minn). In the Blugolds’ win over St. Norbert College (Wis.), the middle hitter had a game-high 16 kills and team-high .464 hitting percentage. She also chipped in with six block assists and two digs in the three wins.

Lau won his first collegiate invite, became the first UW-Eau Claire cross-country runner ever to win the individual title at this meet and led the Blugolds to the team title at the St. Olaf College (Minn.) Invitational, over NCAA Division II teams Michigan Tech University and University of Minnesota-Duluth and No. 7-ranked St Olaf College (Minn.). Lau bested the field of nearly 300 runners covering the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:26 - 16 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Joe Coffey of St. Olaf.

Henderson won a pair of matches during the week at No. 1 singles to increase her winning streak to three. On Sept. 17, she defeated Lindsey Thisius of UW-Stout 6-1, 6-0 and Laura Finn of College of St. Benedict (Minn.) 6-4, 7-5. 

Pashibin and the Blugold volleyball team will be back in action at home Wednesday September 21. The cross-country team will host the Blugold Invite on September 30, and the women's tennis team is at UW-River Falls Wednesday September 21.
