Ramquist Wins WIAC Individual Title & Blugold Women place 3rd

OSHKOSH, WI (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire competed at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Cross Country Championships hosted by UW-Oshkosh at Lake Breeze Golf Course on Saturday, October 31st.  The weather created challenging conditions with gusty winds, temps in the mid 40's and a consistent drizzle that provided plenty of mud for competitors to race through.  The Blugold women placed 3rd of 8 teams with 72 points behind UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse.

Lucy Ramquist (Sr.-River Falls) solidified herself as one of the best distance runners in school history by winning the WIAC Individual Title in a 6K time of 21:57.  Ramquist battled with UW-Stout's Kathleen Thorn for a majority of the race and pulled away the final 800 meters to win by 10 seconds.  Ramquist is the 3rd Blugold to win a WIAC cross country individual crown and joins Katie Somers who won the WIAC title and went on to win the national individual title in 1984 and Chris Goepel who won the WIAC title and went on to finish 5th at Nationals as an individual in 1985.

Clara Williamson (Sr.-Skokie, IL/Niles North) also had a fantastic day placing 4th overall and earning 1st Team All-Conference Honors (top 7) with a 6K time of 22:28.  The Blugold underclassmen raced like veterans on Saturday with four of the top seven being freshmen or sophomores.  Rounding out the top seven include: Morgan Marek (Fr.-Muskego,WI)-21st place in 23:30, Callie Fischer (So.-Ashwaubenon, WI)-23rd place in 23:32, Mel Becker (Jr.-Osseo,WI)-27th place in 23:36, Karen Gomez (Fr.-Chatfield, MN)-31st place in 23:43 and Lian Arzbecker (So.-Pewaukee, WI)-40th place in 24:05.

Up next for the Blugolds is the "JV Cup" this Friday, November 6th hosted by Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.  The women's 6K starts at 3:30 pm followed by the men's 8K at 4:15 pm.  The top 8 runners on the women's and men's side will not race Friday in preparation for the Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Augustana College at Saukie Golf Course in Moline, IL on Saturday, November 14th.
