Volleyball to Host Sixth Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team will host the Sixth Annual Breast Cancer Awareness and Fundraising Event, Friday (Oct. 4) when the Blugolds host UW-Platteville in Zorn Arena for a match beginning at 7 p.m.

While the night will help promote awareness and raise funds, it will also be unique because it will be in Zorn Arena. The Blugolds' regular home venue is the McPhee Physical Education Center but because a crowd of more than 1,000 is anticipated, the event was moved to Zorn. The last time Blugold Volleyball played in Zorn was in the early 1990's. To commemorate this historic match, UW-Eau Claire students can sport their 90's "Tight and Bright" style with prizes going to the "Best Dressed Individual" and "Best Dressed Group" (5 or more students).

Over the past five years, the Blugolds and local volleyball community have raised over $65,000, which is currently being used to fund breast cancer research, awareness and patient programs. The Blugolds are once again partnering with Mayo Clinic Health System and the American Cancer Society, which provide UW-Eau Claire and participating high schools with educational resources and additional fundraising support. All funds raised through area events will be donated to the American Cancer Society and will be used right here in the Chippewa Valley.

Local high schools that are partnering with UW-Eau Claire to help make this event successful are Altoona, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire Immanuel, Eau Claire North, Eleva-Strum, Gilmanton, Lake Holcombe, Mondovi, Owen-Withee and Pepin.

A number of special events are planned for Friday. The first 500 fans through the doors, which will open at 6 p.m., will get a pink rally towel, courtesy of Mayo Clinic Health System. There will be a number of prizes and t-shirts given away along with contests throughout the match and a bucket raffle.

Several Blugold athletics teams will also participate in a bra decorating contest. Bras will be on display in Davies Center on Friday, October 4 and during the match. Each bra will have a donation bucket so students and fans can vote for their favorite bra via their donation.

The match is also Youth Night, where two youths (12th grade and under) will be admitted free with each paid adult. Area teams that register by Thursday, October 3 will also be admitted free. To register your team or to get more information, contact Head Coach Kim Wudi at wudikm@uwec.edu.
