Women's Track & Field Successful at Open

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's track & field team had a strong showing at its weekend events, producing several top efforts at the Platteville Open today.

Ashlyn Mauer (So.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and Erin Schoenfelder (So.-Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) had the best efforts of the day, recording the quickest times in their respective events. Mauer led the field in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:53.18, an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. In the 400-meter hurdle race, Schoenfelder completed the event with a leading time of 1:06.03.

The Blugolds were especially strong in the 5,000-meter race. Teresa Coughlin (Jr.-Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Madi Sawyer (So.-Champlin, Minn./Park) laid down the second and third-best times, led by Coughlin's 18:31.84. In total, Eau Claire runners accounted for five of the top 10 spots and 10 of the top 18 finishes.

Jordanne Greenup (Jr.-Fridley, Minn.) was second fastest in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.80. Blugolds also recorded the third-best times in three other events. Kim Miresse (Jr.-Waukesha, Wis./North) was third quick in the 100-meter hurdles with a 15.04 while Talisa Emberts' (Jr.-Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) provisional qualifying time of 25.16 was third best in the 200-meter dash. Corinna Saager (Sr.-Wausau, Wis./East) completed the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.03.

The Blugolds also had a solid day in the field. Brittany Frederick (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Preble) had the second-longest toss in the discus throw with an effort of 43.35 meters (142-03). Frederick also had the fourth-longest attempt in the hammer throw with 50.38 meters (165-03). Both were provisional qualifying marks.

Julia Baranek (Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) had top five results in the long jump and high jump events. Baranek's attempt of 1.62 meters (5-03.75) in the high jump was third best. She also produced a 5.09 meter (16-08.50) leap in the long jump, which was the fourth-longest jump of the day.

A few Blugolds were also in action at the UW-River Falls Invitational this weekend, competing in the heptathlon. Leading the group in River Falls was Michelle Baranek (Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) with 3,679 points in sixth place.

Next Friday, the Blugolds will return to action at the Phil Esten Challenge in La Crosse, Wis. Events are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
