Three Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - UW-Eau Claire men's hockey player Ross Janecyk (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central), men's swimmer Corey Groshens (So.-St. Louis Park, Minn./Hopkins) and women's swimmer Casey Preissel (Sr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Janecyk recorded a hat-trick in the Blugolds' 6-3 victory over 14th-ranked UW-River Falls on Saturday. While the Blugolds were up 1-0 after the first period, Janecyk kicked off a second period that saw four Blugold goals. He opened scoring in the period at 8:51 on a power-play and after a short-handed goal by River Falls less than two minutes later, he found the back of the net again at 16:24. Five seconds before the game's final buzzer, he recorded the hat-trick with an empty-net goal.

Groshens was part of two first place finishes as the Blugolds defeated UW-Oshkosh 102-44 on Saturday. Groshens had a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.33 while he was part of the winning 400-yard medley relay team and finished with a season-best split in his portion. He also had the top time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:16.78.

Preissel won the 200-yard freestyle and was part of the winning 400-yard medley relay team as the Blugolds defeated UW-Oshkosh 117-29 on Saturday. She finished with a time of 1:59.67 in the 200-yard event while the 400-yard medley relay won with a mark of 4:15.94. She also led off the 800-yard freestyle relay team that finished with the best time, while she finished with a season-best split in her portion. She also had the second best time in the 100-yard freestyle.
