EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team celebrated senior night on Saturday afternoon as they hosted Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opponents, Northland College. Four goals in the final period helped the Blugolds earn the 5-0 shutout over the LumberJills.
Sophie Rausch (Sr. – Fergus Falls, Minn.) opened the scoring just six minutes into the game to give Eau Claire an early 1-0 lead. Hallie Sheridan (Sr. – Fergus Falls, Minn.) and Emily Hart (Sr. – Red Wing, Minn.) were credited with assists on UWEC's first tally.
The Blugolds kept their pressure high throughout the game as they outshot Northland 36-9. The Northland netminder kept the Blugolds scoreless in the second to keep it at a one goal game heading into the final frame.
Eden Gruber (Jr. – Wausau, Wis./West) started the scoring Frenzy for UWEC at the 9:00 mark to increase the Blugold lead to 2-0. Minutes later, Sadie Long (So. – Farmington, Minn.) put home a rebound out front on the power play to put Eau Claire up 3-0. Sydney Johnson (Jr. – Apple Valley, Minn.) and Sami Scherling (Sr. – Rogers, Minn.) both added goals of their own within two minutes of each other to give Eau Claire the 5-0 lead and eventual final scoreline.
Stephanie Martin (Sr. – Yorktown, Va./Tabb) stopped all nine shots she faced to earn her fifth shutout and 18th win of the season. Martin improves her record to 18-2-1 on the year.
The Blugolds (19-3-1, WIAC 9-1) will return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Saturday, February 11th when the host Northland College. UWEC will celebrate Senior Day with a 2PM puck drop.
