ITHACA, N.Y. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire gymnasts competed in three different events on the final day of the 2014 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship at Ithaca College (N.Y.) and two of them finished as All-Americans.
Michaela McCamey-Metropulos (Sr.-Dayton, Ohio) had the Blugolds' best finish as she took third place on the balance beam for the second year in a row to earn first team All-American honors. She finished with a career-high score of 9.725 and ended her career as a three-time balance beam All-American and one-time balance beam national champion, winning the event in 2012.
In the floor exercise, Elizabeth Stubbs (So.-Wayzata, Minn.) finished as a first team All-American for the first time in her career as she tied for sixth place with a score of 9.725. She competed at nationals last year but failed to advance to the event finals.
On the uneven bars, Leah Robinette (So.-Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) came in 14th place with a score of 8.725. This year was the first time Robinette competed at nationals.
Four Blugolds were also named to the NCGA All-Academic Team at the championship. Receiving honors this year were Olivia Aschenbrenner (Sr.-Cedarburg, Wis./Grafton), Lexi Burnikel (Sr.-Winona, Minn./Cotter), Karla Hagen (Sr.-Chaseburg, Wis./Viroqua) and McCamey-Metropulos.

Three Blugold Gymnasts Advance to Finals at NCGA Championship

ITHACA, N.Y. (Blugolds.com) – With five UW-Eau Claire women's gymnasts competing on day one of the 2014 NCGA Championship at Ithaca College (N.Y.), three finished in the top 14 to advance to the individual finals Saturday.
Michaela McCamey-Metropulos (Sr.-Dayton, Ohio) had the top finish of the day for Eau Claire, tying for third place on the balance beam with a score of 9.700, tying her career-high. She previously won the balance beam national title in 2012 and is a two-time first team All-American.
On the uneven bars, Leah Robinette (So.-Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) moved on after tying for 12th place with a score of 9.625, a career-best, which also tied the Blugolds' school record.
Elizabeth Stubbs (So.-Wayzata, Minn.) did just enough to advance in the floor exercise as she tied for 14th place with a career-high score of 9.800.
Also competing today were Kellie Dougherty (So.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) on the uneven bars and Julia Stedman (So.-Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) on the vault. Dougherty tied for 23rd with a score of 9.475 and Stedman finished with a score of 9.400, also tying for 23rd.
Today's competition also determined the team results and UW-Whitewater captured its second consecutive NCGA title, winning with a score of 193.025, two points in front of the second place finisher.
Day two of competition will get underway at 4 p.m. Eastern tomorrow.

Five Blugold Gymnasts Selected to Compete at NCGA Championship

ITHACA, N.Y. (Blugolds.com) – Five UW-Eau Claire gymnasts have earned their way to compete at the 2014 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship at Ithaca College (N.Y.). The team competition will be held on March 21, followed by the individual events on March 22.
Julia Stedman (So.-Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) will compete on the vault. Last season at the NCGA Championship, Stedman came in seventh place on the vault to earn second team All-American honors. This is the second year in a row she will be competing at nationals. This season, she took first at two meets on the vault and most recently tied for seventh at the WIAC Championship/NCGA Regional.
Kellie Dougherty (So.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Leah Robinette (So.-Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) will participate on the uneven bars. Dougherty is making her second straight appearance at nationals while Robinette is competing for the first time. Most recently at the WIAC Championship/NCGA Regional, Robinette took third place on the uneven bars while Dougherty tied for sixth place.
Michaela McCamey-Metropulos (Sr.-Dayton, Ohio) will compete on the balance beam. Two years ago, McCamey-Metropulos won the balance beam national title. This is her fourth straight appearance at the NCGA Championship and she is currently a two-time All-American. She most recently tied for eighth place at the WIAC Championship/NCGA Regional.
Elizabeth Stubbs (So.-Wayzata, Minn.) will compete in the floor exercise. Stubbs has competed strong all season in the floor exercise, finishing no lower than sixth place in all nine meets and taking first place five times. Most recently at the WIAC Championship/NCGA Regional, she tied for fourth place. This is her second appearance at nationals.
