Women's Basketball Presents Check to American Cancer Society

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team presented a check totaling nearly $1,400 to the American Cancer Society at Zorn Arena on Wednesday morning.

The Blugolds, along with sponsors Luther Midelfort, McDonough Manufacturing, Charter Communications and Market & Johnson, raised the money at the annual Pink Zone night on February 16. With more than 600 fans and supporters on hand at the game, money was raised through donations and silent auctions.

On hand at the check presentation Wednesday were Head Coach Tonja Englund, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Beth Hellwig, Blugold captain Hannah Mesick, Michelle Shufelt from American Cancer Society, Joe Buttel from Charter Communications and Nikki Greeler from Charter Communications.

"Our team and our coaching staff were pleased to work with so many wonderful organizations as we continued to raise awareness and support cancer research," Englund said. "We look forward to continuing to grow the Pink Zone event in the future and we cherish the opportunity as a program to make a difference on the court and in our community."

The Blugolds have held a Pink Zone event each of the last five years. The event is part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Pink Zone initiative, which is a global, unified effort for the WBCA nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. In the first four years, the WBCA Pink Zone raised nearly $3.3 Million, reached almost 2.7 Million fans and unified over 4,700 participants.
