Softball Announces 2012 Team Award Winners

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – UW-Eau Claire head coach Leslie Huntington recently announced the team awards for the 2012 season.

Two players were named Most Outstanding Performers, Nikki Bromelkamp (Sr.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) and Emma Wishau (So.-Waterford, Wis./Union).

Bromelkamp, who also received the Big Stick award, led the Blugolds this season with a .388 batting average and 43 RBI, which was second best in the league. Starting 44 games, 41 as catcher, she scored 16 runs and had 47 hits, a mark that ranked second best on the team. She also had six homers, third best on the team. In the field, she record 181 putouts with just three errors for a .985 fielding percentage.

Wishau, a pitcher, finished the season with a 1.70 ERA, ranking second best in the WIAC. Appearing in 28 games while starting 24, she had a 15-7 record and pitched 19 complete games. Wishau struck out 96 batters in 2012 and recorded three shutouts with one save.

Rookie of the Year honors went to Amanda Fischer (Fr.-Wausau, Wis./West). Starting 41 games while playing in 43, Fischer was second on the team with a .385 batting average. She led the Blugolds and was second in the conference with nine home runs and 84 total bases while she was third on the team and fifth in the conference with 32 runs scored.

Selected as Most Improved was Amanda Houle (So.-Chisago City, Minn./Chisago Lakes). Playing in 42 games, 24 of which she started, Houle completed the season with a .231 batting average with 12 hits. Houle also scored 16 runs. A season ago, she played in 28 games, starting just three.

Emily Haluska (Jr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) was presented with the Golden Glove award for the third year in a row. Haluska started 45 games this season, 39 at third base and six at second base, and led the team with 104 assists to go along with 52 putouts. Batting, she had a .242 average and scored 13 runs while recording 29 hits. Haluska also had 10 RBI.

Receiving the Skeet Award were Nikki Brooks (Fr.-New Richmond, Wis./St. Croix Central) and Karen Hansen (Jr.-Amery, Wis.). The Skeet Award is named after former Blugold Mandy Freidel – nicknamed "Skeet" – who always encouraged her teammates and played with passion.
