Blugolds Give Up Four Unanswered Goals in Loss to Superior

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Jordan Singer (So.-Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) put in two goals for the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team, but it wasn't enough to overtake UW-Superior as the Blugolds fell 4-2 tonight at the Hobbs Ice Center.

Singer, assisted by Kurt Weston (So.-Roseau, Minn.), kicked off the scoring for the Blugolds by converting on a power play 4:58 into the game to give Eau Claire the 1-0 advantage. Singer notched another goal for the team-his fourth of the season-just past midpoint of the second period.

But it was what happened in between the Blugolds' two goals that handed Eau Claire its third loss of the season. The Yellowjackets scored four unanswered goals – two in both the first and second periods – in just under 24 minutes. Neither team managed a goal in the third period, leaving the game a 4-2 Blugold loss.

Brandon Stephenson (So.-Saline, Mich.) started the game as goalie for the Blugolds, but after the fourth Yellowjacket goal, Scott Pederson (Jr.-Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) assumed the position until the Blugolds played empty net at the very end of the game. Both Stephenson and Pederson made 11 saves.

Despite being outshot 9-3 in the first period, the Blugolds ended the game with more total shots than Superior, taking 32 to the Yellowjackets' 26.

The loss drops the Blugolds to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings. Superior improves to 2-1 in the conference and 4-2 overall.

The Blugolds will have the chance to even the record against Superior with a rematch at 7 p.m. tomorrow night at Hobbs.
