Late Goals Push Men's Hockey Past Ranked Geneseo

ADRIAN, Mich. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of ranked teams after nailing two goals in the third period to sink No. 9 SUNY-Geneseo 2-0 on the final day of the Adrian Thanksgiving Tournament. The Blugolds beat No. 7 Adrian College (Mich.) 4-3 yesterday.

While the teams remained in a deadlock throughout the first 40 minutes, the Blugolds reigned over the Knights in the third period. Tyler Romasco (Jr.-Perry, Ohio), assisted by Jordan Singer (So.-Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), found the back of the Geneseo net 4:08 into the final period for his fifth goal of the season. Jared Williams (Fr.-West Chicago, Ill./Bartlett) got help from Kurt Weston (So.-Roseau, Minn.) a little over eight minutes later to give Eau Claire the two point advantage heading into the final minutes of the game.

Brandon Stephenson (So.-Saline, Mich.), who played Blugold goalie for the entirety of the game, fended off a handful of Knight comeback attempts throughout the rest of the period to give Eau Claire its second win of the Thanksgiving tournament. The shutout marks the first game this season Geneseo has failed to score a goal.

At the end of the Thanksgiving tournament, two players from each team were honored for outstanding efforts. Stephenson was named Eau Claire's most valuable player on defense. Stephenson made 23 saves today and 25 yesterday en route to the Blugolds' two wins. Romasco earned the offensive MVP title for the team. He scored the first two goals of each game this weekend for the Blugolds.

Eau Claire improves to 5-4 overall. The Blugolds will next face rival UW-Stout at 7:30 p.m. this Friday in Menomonie, Wis.
