Volleyball Opens Trick-or-Treat Classic with Pair of Wins

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The opening day of the annual UW-River Falls Trick-or-Treat Classic brought only treats for the No. 16-ranked UW-Eau Claire volleyball team as the Blugolds claimed a 3-0 win over UW-Superior and a 3-1 win against Concordia University (Wis.).

In the day's first match, the Blugolds breezed past Superior, posting a dominating 25-12 victory in the first set. Eau Claire continued to roll, winning the next sets 25-20, 25-21 and keeping alive its winning streak over the Yellowjackets. Superior hasn't defeated Eau Claire volleyball since October of 1994.

In the match, Blair Murphy (Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.) led Eau Claire with eight digs and Amanda Lessner (Sr.-Watertown, Wis.) tallied 23 assists. Rachel Ver Voort (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Middleton) was the only Blugold to break double digits in kills, making an even 10.

The Blugolds also posted decisive set wins during the match against Concordia. Eau Claire quickly won the first two sets 25-14, 25-17. The Blugolds let the third set get away from them, losing 25-19, but retaliated by winning with the biggest margin of the match, 25-12.

Against the Falcons, Murphy and Ver Voort each totaled a team-high 14 digs while Lessner racked up 46 of the Blugolds' 57 assists. Anne Satterlee (So.-Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) and Ver Voort also led the Blugolds with 16 kills apiece.

The pair of wins improves the Blugolds' season record to 21-8.

Tomorrow, the Blugolds will face UW-Stout and Waldorf (Iowa) for day two of the Trick-or-Treat Classic. Competition against Stout will begin at 12 p.m.
