Three Blugold Student-Athletes Named WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Recognized this week were women's soccer goalkeeper Nina Behrenbrinker (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), women's golfer Kate Engler (Jr.-Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner) and women's volleyball player Kelly Schuh (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./Hortonville).

Behrenbrinker had a number of big saves in two matches during the week, playing 200 minutes in goal and guiding the Blugolds to a 4-1 win over Hamline University (Minn.) on Sept. 4, and a 1-1 double overtime tie against Augsburg College (Minn.) on Sept. 8. Against the Pipers, she stopped two shots, while making 10 saves against the Auggies.  Behrenbrinker is now 2-0-1 on the season.

Engler finished in second place to lead the Blugolds to a sixth-place finish at the Wartburg College (Iowa) Invitational held Sept. 7-8.  She was tied for first after round one, shooting 74, and finished one stroke out of first place after shooting another 74 on the second day for a two-day total of 148.

Competing in five matches during the week, Schuh led the Blugolds in kills all five times as she reached double figures each match as the Blugolds went 2-3 on the week.  For the week, she finished with 71 kills and a hitting percentage of .241.  Her largest kill total and best hitting percentage came against No. 1-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Sept. 6, recording 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .364.  She also had 11 service aces, seven blocks assists and five set assists during the week.  Playing in four matches at the Augsburg College (Minn.) Invitational, she was named to the All-Tournament Team.
