MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Kate Engler (Jr.-Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner) led the UW-Eau Claire women's golf team by being named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year while a total of four Blugolds were honored by the WIAC.
Engler is the fourth individual in program history to claim the Player of the Year plaque, joining Jennifer Prock (2002), Maggie Loney (2004 and 2005) and Sara Mattes (2010). She earned first team accolades for the second straight year after receiving second team laurels in 2011. She owned a league-best 77.5 stroke average in 11 rounds this fall and captured medalist honors at the WIAC championship and College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) Blazer Invitational, while placing second at the Wartburg College (Iowa) Fall Invitational.
Joining Engler on the first team was Emily Stone (Jr.-Eden Prairie, Minn.) while Mandi Salo (Jr.-Hermantown, Minn.) was named to the second team. Samantha Dvorsak (Jr.-Corcoran, Minn./Rockford) was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team, which was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
Stone was second on the team this fall, averaging 81.1 strokes while playing nine rounds. She finished in the top five at two tournaments.
Salo had 86.5 strokes per round, third on the team, after playing 11 rounds.
It was the first team either player was selected to the All-WIAC team.
The team was determined by using the NCAA Division III GolfStat rankings immediately following the conclusion of the conference championship. A player must have completed eight rounds in order to be eligible.
