EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team squared off with UW-Superior in a rematch of Friday night's thrilling 5-4 victory. The result this time, was drastically different as the Yellowjackets picked up a 6-1 win at Hobbs Ice Center.
The Yellowjackets got on the board first at 11:09 of the first period and never looked back. The first period ended 1-0, but UW-Superior was in control, outshooting the Blugolds 14-5 in the stanza.
At 2:50, the Yellowjackets took advantage of a Blugold turnover in the defensive zone and scored a short-handed goal, their second in two games. They scored again at 12:57 of the second period to take a 3-0 advantage into the second intermission.
The Blugolds scored three power-play goals in the third period to come from behind Friday night and it looked like the might make a comeback effort again Saturday night.
At 7:57 of the third period, Casey McMullen (Sr.-Minneapolis, Minn./South) scored an unassisted goal to bring the Blugolds to within two at 3-1 with plenty of time to play.
But at 10:10, the Yellowjackets answered with their fourth goal of the night to end any threat of a comeback. They added two more goals at 16:40 and 19:53 to pick up the 6-1 victory.
Paige Turner (Fr.-Iron River, Wis./Duluth East) made her third straight start in goal and made 28 saves on 34 shots.
After a penalty-filled game on Friday, Saturday was much cleaner, with both teams taking six penalties each. The Blugolds finished 0-for-6 on the power-play after going 3-for-10 Friday night.
The Blugolds will be home again next weekend to take on Adrian College (Mich.) at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night at Hobbs Ice Center.
