MINNEAPOLIS, MN (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team was back on the pitch Tuesday night after a five-day break as they faced off against the Augsburg University Auggies at Edor Nelson Field. A transition goal by the Auggies in the first half was the deciding factor as Eau Claire received their first loss of the season, 0-1.

Box Score

Almost a year ago to date, the Blugolds and Auggies faced off in Eau Claire on a brisk weekday evening. UW-Eau Claire battled back after an opening Augsburg goal with two unanswered to secure the 2-1 victory. Their second meeting in program history would see a similar start but ultimately a different outcome.

In the 22nd minute, Augsburg capitalized on a Blugold turnover in their own half to record the contest's first goal. UWEC dug deep with their long passing style of play to find opportunities in the offensive half. Carter Theisfeld (So. – Forest Lake, MN) led UWEC in shots during the evening affair as Eau Claire attempted to rewrite history. The lone goal in the opening half held the visitors to a one goal deficit at halftime.

The second have showcased physicality between both sides as the Blugolds and Auggies combined for 25 fouls in the second frame and 42 fouls during the match. UW-Eau Claire found their opportunities from corners and free kicks throughout the night, but the Augsburg goalkeeper would not let up. Nathan Donovan (So. – Hazel Green, WI/Wahlert Catholic) found the best chance of the night as he was brought down inside the penalty area and was awarded with a penalty kick. Donovan stepped back and fired his shot to the keeper's left side but was ultimately stopped by the Auggie goalie.

In the closing minutes, Eau Claire pushed the pressure up field to find the equalizer with scoring chances from Max Lynch (Fr. – Verona, WI) and Nathan Donovan. The Augsburg back line and goalkeeper stood strong and delivered UWEC their first loss of the year.

Spencer Banks (So. – Superior, WI) stopped three of the four shots he faced in his first defeat of the season. Banks now holds a record of 10-1-0.

The Blugolds (13-1) will be back on the road on Thursday, October 6th when they travel to Northfield, MN and take on St. Olaf College. Kickoff from Rolf Melby Field is scheduled for 4PM.
