Donovan's Early Strike Powers Blugolds Over Loras

EAU CLAIRE, WI (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team was at home on Saturday to complete their doubleheader weekend against Loras College. An early penalty kick goal by Nathan Donovan (So. – Hazel Green, WI/Wahlert Catholic) and solid defensive play by the Blugolds earned them the 1-0 shutout win.

Box Score

In the 21st minute, Nathan Donovan was taken down inside the penalty area by the Loras defense to earn UW-Eau Claire a penalty kick. Donovan stepped back and rocketed a shot to the right side of the net past the Loras goalkeeper to put UWEC up 1-0. The remainder of the first half showcased the Blugold offense as the defense allowed zero shots from the Loras Duhawks.

As the Blugolds came out of halftime with the 1-0 lead, the physicality increased between the two teams as they combined for 37 fouls through 90 minutes of play. The second half featured even possession from both sides, but the Blugold defense held strong allowing only two shots on goal. The Blugold offense took advantage of the heavy Loras pressure with multiple looks on the counterattack. Donovan and Will Heinen (So. – Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) led the team during the contest with two shots on goal each.

Spencer Banks (So. – Superior, WI) stopped the only shot he faced on the day for his ninth win of the season. Banks also recorded his fifth shutout of the year.

The Blugolds (12-0) will be back at home on Wednesday, September 28th when they host Lawrence University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4PM at Simpson Field.
