Blugolds Move to 8-0 after Victory over Firebirds

EAU CLAIRE, WI (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team hosted the Carthage College Firebirds Saturday afternoon at 2 P.M. on Simpson Field. An early goal off of a penalty kick put the Firebirds up 1-0 for the first half. Eau Claire answered with three goals in the second half moving the Blugolds to 8-0 after their dominating 3-1 finish over the Firebirds.

The Blugolds started down early with the Firebirds scoring at 1:28 off of a penalty kick. The team held up a defensive front the rest of the half only allowing eight shots on goal and keeping the score at 0-1 going into halftime. 

Coming out of the break the Blugolds Nathan Donnovan (So.-Hazel Green, WI/Wahlert Catholic) tied the match up 1-1 with an unassisted goal off of a penalty kick. Quickly after Max Lynch (Fr.-Verona, WI), found the back of the net with a goal assisted by Sam Lynch (Jr.-Verona, WI) and Porter Ball (Jr.- Minneapolis, MN/Holy Angels). The Blugolds took the lead 2-1 in the 61st minute of the match. In the 88th minute the Blugolds converted on another unassisted penalty kick with Ethan Anderson (Jr.- Burnsville, MN) scoring the last goal of the game. 

The Firebirds started strong, but the Blugolds stayed consistent and kept focused in a physical game resulting in a 3-1 victory. Spencer Banks (So.-Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) held strong in goal with eight saves in 90 minutes of play moving to a record of 7-0 while in goal. 

The Blugolds (8-0) will be back at Simpson Field tomorrow Sunday, September 18th as they host Concordia Moorehead. Kickoff between the Blugolds and Cobbers is scheduled for 1PM.
