Three Blugolds Earn Weekly WIAC Accolades

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Selected this week were football player David Goodman (Sr.-Neenah, Wis.) on special teams and women's tennis players Taylor Heltne (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Katie Gillman (So.-Red Wing, Minn.) for their doubles play.

Goodman blocked a punt and also caught a pass on a fake punt to help the Blugolds to a 31-21 win at UW-La Crosse. In the first quarter with the Eagles on their own 34, Goodman blocked a punt that teammate Mitch Olson recovered and the Blugolds scored a touchdown on the very next drive. In the fourth quarter with the score 24-21, Goodman caught a nine-yard pass on a fake punt to give the Blugolds a first down. A few plays later, UW-Eau Claire scored its final touchdown of the game.

Heltne and Gillman, who also were named WIAC athletes of the week last week, swept conference opponents during the week at No. 1 doubles, beating their UW-La Crosse opponents 8-3 on Oct. 15, while coming away with an 8-4 win on Oct. 16 against their UW-Whitewater opponents. The pair finished the regular season winning nine straight matches and had an overall record of 15-2 and a conference mark of 6-0.
