Blugolds Hold On To Defeat Platteville 3-2 in Regular Season Finale

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – After suffering losses to two nationally ranked opponents a week ago, the UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team picked up two conference wins this weekend, including a 3-2 win over UW-Platteville at Williams Fieldhouse to end the regular season today.

The Blugolds defeated Platteville 3-2. Eau Claire took an early lead by winning the first set 25-15 before dropping two close sets 25-22 and 26-24. But the Blugolds weren't finished yet and won the final two sets 25-23 and 15-12 to win the match.

With the win, the Blugolds tied for second place in the WIAC with UW-Whitewater, both having a 6-2 record. Eau Claire earned the No. 3 seed in the 2012 WIAC Championship and will host UW-Stout in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Against the Pioneers, Amy Bomgren (Sr.-Woodbury, Minn.) and Anne Satterlee (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon)  contributed 20 and 15 of the team's 67 kills, respectively. Two other Blugolds also reached double figures in kills.

Lauren Sutherland (Jr.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) recorded 19 digs to lead Eau Claire, while teammate Kelly Schuh (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./Hortonville) tacked on 15 more. The Blugolds' racked up 73 digs on the night.

Emily Neave (Sr.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) led the match with 59 sets assists.

The Pioneers end the season with a 21-12 overall record, going 2-6 in WIAC play. They were eliminated from the WIAC tournament with the loss to the Blugolds. Eau Claire is 22-11 overall.
