Blugold Swimming & Diving takes down Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire swimming and diving teams took on Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe, UW-Whitewater on Saturday, with both the men and women coming home with a dual win.

Results

The Blugold men took down the Warhawks by a score of 184-107, winning 13 out of 16 events.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Jack Kelly (Sr. - Medina, MN/Wayzata), Collin Miller (So. – Rochester, MN/Schaeffer Academy), Conner Pendill (So. – Savage, MN/Burnsville) and Logan Coert (Sr. – Cedarburg, WI) won the event with a time of 1:38.23.

Miller also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.39 and the 200-yard IM (2:00.32).

Greg Pehl (Fr. – New Brighton, MN/Irondale), Andrew Strauch (Jr. – Lakeville, MN/North) and Konrad Plomedahl (Jr. – Madison, WI/Sun Prairie) claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly with times of 2:01.92, 2:03.39 and 2:04.04, respectively.

Joseph Ackerson (Fr. – Excelsior, MN/Minnetonka) won the 50-yard freestyle (22.07) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.34).

Dayton Miller (Sr. - Rochester, MN/Schaeffer Academy) and Tommy Stiegel (Fr. – Sauk Rapids, MN/ Sauk Rapids-Rice) went 1-2 in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.76 and 2:16.30) while Nicholas Meints (So – Parker, CO/Ponderosa) won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:59.10.

Eau Claire dominated the 100-yard butterfly, as Pendill (54.46), Pehl (54.92) Jake Hamerla (Fr. Lac du Flambeau, WI/Lakeland Union) (55.04) and Plomedahl (55.51) secured the top four spots.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Caleb Odmark (Jr. – White Bear Lake, MN), Kelly, C. Miller and Coert took first with a time of 3:13.44.

Dylan Glumac-Berberich (So. – Fridley, MN) won the 1-meter dive (310.87) while Noah Krantz (Fr. – Waunakee, WI/Middleton) was second (236.90). Glumac-Berberich also earned another NCAA zone cut for the 1-meter dive.

For the women, Eau Claire defeated Whitewater 153-141, edging the Warhawks in the last relay to take the win. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Jessica Short (Jr. – Grafton, WI, Jessica Wilson (Fr. – Brookfield, WI/Wauwatosa West), Brittany Farr (Jr. – Madison, WI/James Madison Memorial) and Emily Ries (Fr. - Eau Claire, WI/Memorial took first with a time of 3:43.81.

Short, Wilson and Channing Parkman (Fr. – Rice Lake, WI) finished 1-2-3 in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:01.97, 1:03.94 and 1:04.22 respectively. Short also won the 100-yard freestyle (54.71) and 200-yard IM (2:11.66).

Ries won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.59 while Kate Stensberg (Fr. – Antigo, WI) and Breanna Kimmes (So. – Hastings, MN) took the top spots in the 200-yard backstroke with times of 2:18.10 and 2:20.68.

Bailei Hughes (Sr. – Winona, MN) won both the 1 and 3-meter dives (224.02 and 217.42).

"The team swam with a lot of energy and urgency today," said Head Coach Annie Ryder. "There were a lot of must-win events for us today and the team stepped up in a big way. Every person on the team contributed and that's what they needed to do."

The Blugolds will take a break from competition while they train for the WIAC Championships, which will take place Feb. 15-17 in Brown Deer, Wis.
