Four Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's cross country runner Darin Lau (Eau Claire, Wis.), women's cross country runner Sam Slattery (Waunakee,Wis.), men's swimmer Dayton Miller (Rochester, Minn.) and women's diver Bailei Hughes (Winona, Minn.) have each been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Men's cross country runner Darin Lau placed third out of 354 runners at the Pre-National "Cowbell Classic" hosted by Principia College (Ill.) on October 14. The senior finished the 8,000 meter in 24:46 helping the Blugold finish 11th in the 38 team event. On the women's side Samantha Slattery placed 13th out of 332 runners with a 6,000-meter time of 21:56. She helped the Blugold women finish 9th out of 36 teams at the Pre-National "Cowbell Classic". The cross country team will host the City Wells Invite on October 20th, with the men's race starting at 4pm and the women at 4:45pm. 

Women's diver Bailei Hughes won both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events in the Blugolds meet with UW-Oshkosh on October 14th. Hughes finished with a final socre of 176.20 in the 3-meter event, with the second place finisher scoring 101.30. In the 1-meter competition, she finished with a final score of 215.50. The Blugold women defeated UW-Oshkosh 157-79. Dayton Miller helped the Blugold men's swimming and diving team to a 170-56 victory over UW-Oshkosh. Miller won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.75 and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.38. He also helped the 200-yard medley relay team to a second-place finish. The swimming and diving teams will host UW-Stevens Point on October 21st at 1:00pm.
