STEVENS POINT, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team (3-10, 1-4 WIAC) took the mat Thursday night for a conference duel against Stevens Point (6-9, 3-1 WIAC).
While the team outcome was not what had been hoped for—Eau Claire lost 9-29—three Blugolds emerged victorious.
Youth led the way Eau Claire, as two of the team's winners were freshmen.
Matthew Laugen (Fr. Fergus Falls, MN) won by decision, 5-3 at 174 pounds over Stevens Point's Dylan Diebitz.
Justin Karkula (Fr. Oshkosh, WI) found victory at heavyweight, defeating Dominic Gunderson by decision, 10-9.
Mat Rieckhoff (Sr. Wausau, Wis.) also claimed victory by decision at 184 pounds, winning 4-1 over Anthony Rottier.
The Blugolds will not have much time to recover, as they travel to Whitewater to battle in the UW-Whitewater Border Brawl on Saturday.
