ROCHESTER, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – Five UW-Eau Claire wrestlers finished in sixth place or better, opening the season at the Rochester Community and Technical College Yellowjacket Open today.
At 285 pounds, Eau Claire saw the most success as two Blugolds wrestled for third place after going 3-1 to start the day. In the third-place match, Justin Karkula (So.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) faced Cecil Philson (Fr.-Thorp, Wis.), and Karkula came out on top by winning by major decision, 21-10.
At 197 pounds, Josh Cormican (So.-Boyceville, Wis.) took fourth place. He lost by fall in the third-place match and finished the day with a 3-2 record.
Competing at 165 pounds, Tyler Henke (Fr.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) took fifth place, winning by injury default in his final match of the day. He finished 4-1 on the day.
At 174 pounds, Matthew Laugen (So.-Fergus Falls, Minn./Kennedy) came in sixth place. He finished the day with a 3-2 record and narrowly fell in the final match of the day, 3-1.
Next Saturday the Blugolds will be at the UW-Stevens Point Open, which is set to get underway at 9 a.m.
