MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The No. 8 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team was defeated by Augsburg College 2-1 in a tight overtime thriller on Saturday Night at Ed Saugestad Arena in Minneapolis.

After a disappointing tie on Friday night, the Blugolds couldn't return to the win column in this defensive showdown that needed five extra minutes once again.

A Blugolds' penalty aided the first Auggies' goal in this one as Luke Dietsch found the back of the net with a power-play goal with 8:33 left in the first period.

After being outshot 7-6 in the first period, the Blugolds outshot the Auggies 12-10 in a scoreless second period.

UW-Eau Claire knotted things up with 12:30 left in the second period on a goal scored by Jesse Tredinnick (Jr. – Onalaska, WI) assisted by Logan Von Ruden (Fr. – Northfield, MN) and Lucas Kohls (Jr. – Forest Lake, MN).

Both teams had plenty of quality chances in the rest of regulation but were unable to beat stellar goalie play from both Nick Schmit and Jay Deo (Sr. – Langley, British Columbia).

With just 36 seconds left in the overtime period, the Auggies stunned the Blugolds with a game-winning goal scored by Nate Flynn unassisted to give Augsburg the 2-1 win.

The Blugolds recorded nine shots on goal in the overtime period, but were unable to put a deciding goal behind Schmit.

Deo made his fourth consecutive start and was rock solid in this one saving 31 of the 33 Augsburg' shots on goal in the game.

The Blugolds (2-1-1) will try to get back to their winning ways next weekend as they head back to Minnesota with games against St. John's on Friday and Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday.
