Women's Cross Country Claims Fifth Straight WIAC Title

COLFAX, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's cross country team won the 2011 WIAC Championship, hosted by UW-Stout, to secure its fifth consecutive conference title and seventh overall at Whitetail Golf Course today.

The Blugolds, who finished with 43 points last season, improved to record 41 on the 6,000-meter course today. UW-Stevens Point was second with a score of 94 while UW-La Crosse was third with 103.

Eau Claire had five runners finish in the top 12 and had 10 finish 23rd place or better.

While UW-Oshkosh's Christy Cazzola led the field of 102 runners with a time of 21:27.2, Madi Sawyer (So.-Champlin, Minn./Park) led the Blugolds with a mark of 22:34.5 in fifth place.

Crossing the line next, in sixth and seventh place, were Ashlyn Mauer (Jr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and Alyssa Sybilrud (Sr.-Savage, Minn./Burnsville) with times of 22:36.3 and 22:39.3, respectively.

Rounding out the top five runners for Eau Claire were Lucy Ramquist (Fr.-River Falls, Wis.) and Steph Sjostrom (Jr.-Champlin, Minn./Park). They finished in 11th and 12th place, respectively.

Alana Jenkins (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial), who finished the race in 22nd place, was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team, which honors a student-athlete from each school who displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.

Next up, some members of the team will travel to Decorah, Iowa for the Luther College JV Cup next Friday. The following weekend, NCAA post-season events begin.
