ROCHESTER, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team kicked off the 2013-14 season competing at Rochester Community and Technical College's Yellowjacket Open today.
Three Blugolds claimed runner-up finishes while a total of five finished in the top six.
At 141 pounds, Blugold All-American Nathaniel Behnke (So.-Bruce, Wis.) took second place after falling 6-3 in the championship match. He won two matches to advance to the championship.
At 165 pounds, Ryan Behnke (Fr.-Bruce, Wis.) finished in second place, falling 15-6 in the championship match after winning twice to make it to the final.
Josh Cormican (Fr.-Boyceville, Wis.) was the other Blugold to take second, competing at 197 pounds. He opened with two wins and then fell after getting pinned in 4:22 in the championship match.
Matt Koch (So.-Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) took fifth at 157 pounds and Justin Karkula (Fr.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) finished in sixth place at 285 pounds.
Next Saturday, the Blugolds will be at the Pointer Open, hosted by UW-Stevens Point. Action will get underway at 9 a.m.
