Women's Hockey shuts out Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – Coming off a big win over the second-ranked University of Wisconsin-River Falls, the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team continued their hot start to the season with a 4-0 win over Saint Mary's University on Saturday.

After a scoreless first period, Kelly Knetter (So. – Wausau, WI/West) got the Blugolds going with an unassisted power play goal at the 8:42 mark in the second period. Mariah Czech (Sr. – Andover, MN) followed with a goal of her own two minutes later, finding the back of the net off an assist from Maggie Koethe (So. – Brooklyn Park, MN/Maranatha Christian Academy).

The Blugolds would add another goal late in the third as Jaedyn Walz (Jr. – Woodbury, MN/East Ridge) tallied another power play goal, thanks to assists from Lauren Norgren (Jr. – Fergus Falls, MN) and Czech.

With less than a minute remaining in the game, Monica Sjodin (So. – Anoka, MN) would seal the win with an unassisted, shorthanded empty-net goal as Eau Claire cruised to the 4-0 victory.

Erin Connolly (Fr. – Mequon, WI/Homestead) earned the shut-out win in goal, recording 17 saves.

The Blugolds out-shot the Cardinals 34-17 and held a slight edge in face-offs, 31-26.

Eau Claire (6-3, 1-1 WIAC) will be back in action on Tuesday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College at 7 p.m.
